Modern Canna is proud to be the only Leafly certified lab partner in the state Florida. Our reputation in the cannabis and hemp industries was built by integrity, accuracy, efficiency, transparency, and dependability. We truly care about the cannabis and hemp industries, and we show it by generating real data that is verifiable, reproducible, and defensible. We only work with cannabis and hemp companies who who share our same passion and aim to build sustainable businesses.

Virtually every plant is subject to the threat of mold and mildew, and hemp is no exception. This is why testing for mold, mildew, and yeasts in your hemp crop is critical for its overall health.

At Modern Canna, Florida’s premier hemp testing facility, we use state-of-the-art technology to conduct all hemp mold and mildew testing. Our microbiological testing methods involve testing for unique DNA sequences, mainly via the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR).Lab beakers and test tubes on drying rack

Accurate Hemp Mold Testing

Mold testing in hemp requires precise accuracy. It does not take long for mold infestation to become epidemic in plants, especially in warmer, more humid, climates.

Our microbial testing platform is the currently the most effective way to detect molds and yeast on hemp plants, and is far superior to culture-based testing. The latter can only identify certain mold and yeast species, which grow within specific mediums. Modern Canna’s microbial testing methodologies allow for identification of several mold and yeast species in any hemp plant.

Molds and Mildews in Hemp

The presence of mold in hemp causes plant deterioration. Some mold species, including Aspergillus fumigatus, produce toxins that may cause serious or even deadly infections. Our testing methods identify whether molds are benign or even helpful in some situations, or dangerous to plant and human health.

Powdery mildew, or fungus Golovinomyces sp., primarily affects hemp grown in greenhouses and is rarely an issue for field-grown plants. Signs of powdery mildew include white or other light-colored spores on the infected parts of the plant. Within a short amount of time, the powdery mildew may spread to every leaf surface and affect buds. Thus, powdery mildew can keep plants from reproducing.

The disease occurs more frequently in spring, when spores travel either by rain or irrigation, but infections may persist throughout the entire growing season. The fungus may also overwinter on plant materials. At this time, there are no fungicides available for control of powdery mildew in this plant, so regular hemp mildew testing is essential.

At Modern Canna, we use DNA-based mildew testing in hemp so that the fungus is identifiable long before the eye can see it. Once hemp cultivators know that mildew is present, they can consider treatment options or remove affected plants so that the fungus does not spread and potentially ruin a crop. Treatment options vary and include ultraviolet light, ionizing radiation, and gas treatment. Biological control agents are also effective, but the efficacy of individual agents may depend on the region.

The DNA plant screening process is conducted via a sample taken from a tiny hole punched in a leaf. If the sample contains powdery mildew fungus, the results are immediately known upon testing.

Although we are based in Florida, we conduct hemp testing on a national and international scale. For that reason, our testing conforms with various state regulations for hemp mold and mildew testing. Many jurisdictions have a maximum threshold for mold and mildew in samples, and hemp cultivators must stay below those parameters.
